A Brief
History of the Mini Juniors Section of Clwb Rygbi Dinbych 1979 - 2001
The idea
of a Minis section being formed at Clwb Rygbi Dinbych came from the late
Mr D. L. Phillips in 1979. He was also one of the founders of the senior
club in 1977 and, after whom, our playing fields were named – ‘Caeau Les
Phillips’. His son, Tegid, is the present Senior Coach at the club. And
so the seed was sown for, what was a club with over 150 junior members
from six years of age to sixteen, ably supported by WRU qualified
coaches.
This was
not always the case, as between 1982 and 1984, the minis struggled
because of a lack of interest from the home and the likes of Jeff
Jenkins and Terry Bryer had to struggle on without too much support.
However, the club grew stronger each year from 1984, with many players
during that period achieving county and North Wales representative
honours at junior level. Towards the end of this period, two girls were
chosen for the Welsh Girls’ under 16s team.
In the
present (2006-2007) first team squad of the senior club are players who
were involved, when younger, in the mini-junior set-up some as far back
as 1984, for example, the captain and vice captain Sion Edwards and Tony
Jones. They, with Iwan Roberts, Trystan Rowlands, Rhodri Sellers and
Gareth Roberts have developed over the years to be good enough to play
for the North Wales Senior team. Iwan Roberts also gained caps for
playing for the Welsh Districts team against countries such as Holland
and Germany. Others in the present first team squad and who played for
the minis are Iwan Edwards, Tino Rizzi, David Haycock, Geraint Madoc
Jones, Jamie Winning, Alan Waterfield, Noel Spillane, Dion Howatson,
Alex Garvey, Daniel Jones, Gareth Hargraves, Osian Williams, John
Winning, Wil Jones, Llion Jones and Llion Edwards. The present 2nd
team captain Alwyn Williams was a faithful member of the minis.
In the
decade 1990 to 2000, the club went on many tours, mainly to West and
South Wales, playing in Dinefwr, the Amman, Towy and Gwendraeth Valleys,
Whitland, Lampeter and Swansea. In 1997, a team played in the Wicklow
Festival in Ireland and in 1999, the club took two teams to Morley and
Blyth in N.E. England. Clubs from other parts of Wales, England,
Scotland and Ireland have also toured here. One of the most successful
teams produced by the club was the under 14s team of 1997-98, which went
unbeaten throughout the season and won the North Wales League title as
well as the North Wales Cup. They were coached by Jim Garvey and the
director of the Summer School (1995-2006) Keith Hulse.
In
recognition of the development structure at junior level, the club, in
2000, was granted the inaugural Clwb Cymru Elite status, one of only 22
in the whole of Wales.
Coaches
from the club, over the years, have visited feeder primary school to
offer coaching. In the early years, the best schools for supporting the
mini-juniors were Tremeirchion, Prion and Twm o’r Nant.
Since its
formation, the club has been indebted for the support received from the
senior club and especially from the late Mr D Leslie Phillips and after
that Mr Jeff Jenkins.
Moreover
the mini-juniors could not have developed as it did without the ready
advice and encouragement received from the North Wales Development
Officer Mr Austin Thomas and the three Denbighshire WRU Development
Officers in post over that period.
